The new Ford Maverick Lobo is set to revive the iconic street truck era that captivated enthusiasts from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. Drawing inspiration from Maverick customers who have already started customizing their trucks for enhanced performance, the Maverick Lobo offers a modern platform for street truck builds. The Vision Behind Maverick Lobo
Ford designer Josh Blundo saw the potential in the Maverick when he joined the company in 2019. He envisioned a performance truck with a widebody, wings, front splitter, and custom wheels. This vision led to a special build by Tucci Hot Rods, which received acclaim at the 2021 Special Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) trade show. With support from the Ford team, Blundo’s concept evolved into the Maverick Lobo.
Engineers like Keith Daugherty contributed by fine-tuning the springs and suspension, testing components from other Ford performance vehicles to create an authentic on-road performance truck.
Engineered for On-Road Performance
The Maverick Lobo features a lowered ride height and an on-road tuned suspension, complemented by a 2-liter EcoBoost engine, all adhering to Built Ford Tough standards and backed by a factory warranty. The front ride height is 0.5 inches lower, and the rear is 1.12 inches lower than the standard Maverick, with an overall roof height reduction of 0.8 inches.
The tuned steering offers a performance car-like driving experience, enhanced by torque vectoring through a twin-clutch rear drive unit and bigger, dual-piston front brake calipers from the Focus ST. Inspired by drifting and autocross, the new Lobo drive mode improves cornering, grip, and stability by minimizing understeer. This mode, designed for closed courses, activates the truck’s torque while reducing stability control intervention, akin to Mustang’s track mode.
To handle the demands of performance driving, the Maverick Lobo is equipped with an upgraded cooling system, utilizing a larger radiator, fan from the 4K towing package, and a transmission oil cooler.
Distinctive Street Truck Design
The Maverick Lobo retains the aesthetic appeal of the Maverick but with a unique twist. The front style, painted rear bumper, and rocker moldings contrast with a black-painted roof and 19-inch black wheels. Inside, the design takes cues from street art, influenced by designer Kristen Keenan’s travels and her experience in designing athletic shoes.
The interior features Grabber Blue and Electric Lime accent stitching, a graffiti-inspired overprint on the seats, and the Lobo name embossed into the black driver and passenger seats. This color scheme reflects current streetwear trends, combining multiple colors harmoniously.
Configurations and Technology
The Ford Maverick Lobo comes in two configurations: standard and high. The standard configuration includes all the performance and design features described above. The high configuration adds luxuries like a heated steering wheel and seats, Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 driver-assist technologies, a 360-degree camera, spray-in bedliner, moon roof, and, starting early in 2025, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
Pro Trailer Hitch Assist simplifies trailer hitching by using the rear camera and corner radars to align the hitch with the trailer coupler, controlling the truck’s speed, steering, and braking. Once hitched, Pro Trailer Backup Assist makes reversing a trailer easy by allowing the driver to control the direction with a knob.
