Subaru Motorsports USA has officially revealed “Project Midnight,” the fastest and most advanced WRX ever built, set to make its debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This groundbreaking vehicle builds upon the legacy of the record-shattering “Airslayer” Gymkhana car, pushing the boundaries of performance and speed to unprecedented levels.
The Evolution of Speed: From Airslayer to Project Midnight
Project Midnight is the next evolutionary step from its predecessor, the Airslayer. The Airslayer, based on a 2020 Subaru WRX STI, became a viral sensation in Gymkhana 2020, performing breathtaking stunts, including a 230-foot jump with its active rear wing controlling the car mid-air. While Airslayer set records at events like the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and Car & Driver Magazine’s Lightning Lap, it was designed to excel in a variety of challenges. This versatility led to the creation of Project Midnight, a vehicle with a single mission: unrivaled tarmac speed.
A Legacy of Rallycross Dominance
Inspired by the Airslayer’s achievements, Subaru Motorsports USA reimagined the current WRX platform with a laser focus on pure speed. Piloted by Scott Speed, a driver with a stellar background in F1 and rallycross, Project Midnight is poised to redefine performance standards.
Aerodynamic Excellence and Lightweight Design
Project Midnight boasts ultra-wide aerodynamic bodywork and a dramatically enlarged wing, derived from the team’s WRX ARA24 gravel rally car. The carbon fiber body and significantly lightened chassis result in a curb weight of under 2,500 pounds—almost 300 pounds lighter than the Airslayer and 1,000 pounds lighter than a standard WRX. The vehicle features specially designed tarmac suspension geometry and swaps the 17-inch rallycross wheels for 18×11-inch OZ Racing Superturismo LMP magnesium wheels fitted with 280/650R18 Yokohama ADVAN slicks.
Unmatched Power and Performance
Under the hood, Project Midnight is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter flat-four engine that generates an astonishing 670 hp and 680 lb-ft of torque. The engine revs to 9,500 rpm, and the car’s hood-exit exhaust spits flames, showcasing its raw power. This engine is the latest and highest-performing evolution of Subaru Motorsports USA’s rallycross powerplant, which helped Scott Speed secure the Nitro Rallycross Teams Championship in 2021.
