Rivian has introduced new vehicles called R2, R3 and R3X, which are built on a brand-new midsize platform.
Rivian R2 is a midsize SUV that offers a mix of performance, capability, and usefulness in a five-seat setup. It’s designed for both exciting adventures and everyday use. The rear glass can be fully lowered into the liftgate, making it easy to carry various gear and providing a cool open-air driving experience. Inside, the design is user-friendly, featuring comfortable seating that can be folded flat for extra storage and even car camping.
Rivian R3 is a midsize crossover that’s compact but packs a punch in terms of performance, off-road capability, passenger comfort, and storage. Rivian R3X is a high-performance version of R3 with enhanced abilities both on and off the road. The design of both the exterior and interior of R3 is attractive and iconic, showcasing Rivian’s recognizable style.
Both R2 and R3 will have two battery options. The larger battery can cover over 300 miles on a single charge and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds for the fastest configuration.
The starting price for R2 is estimated to be around $45,000, and Rivian R3 will be even more affordable than R2. This means that more people will be able to buy Rivian vehicles. Rivian’s teams have been working hard to keep costs down by improving how things are made, coming up with new designs, and making sure they have a strong supply chain.
The Rivian R2 can be reserved in the U.S. for $100, and deliveries are expected to start in the first half of 2026. After R2, R3 and R3X will be delivered to customers to make sure everything goes smoothly and R2 launches successfully. This is something Rivian learned from launching R1T, R1S, and EDV all at the same time. After the North American launch, R2, R3, and R3X will also be available in other parts of the world.
All-New Foundation:
R2 and R3 were created on a completely new midsize vehicle platform to provide excellent performance, a long driving range, and cost savings. This platform is smartly designed to simplify and reduce the number of parts. It includes high-pressure die castings, a structural battery unit where the top part also acts as the floor, and closure systems that make things much simpler. R2 and R3 also use Rivian’s drive unit platform, as well as their own network architecture, computer arrangement, and software system.
Key Features of R2 and R3:
- Three Motor Options: R2 and R3 come with three different motor configurations – Single-Motor (rear-wheel drive), Dual-Motor (all-wheel drive), and Tri-Motor (two motors in the back and one in the front). The fastest one can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds.
- Advanced Battery Design: Both R2 and R3 use a new type of battery with 4695 cells, providing better energy density and output. This technology is expected to give over 300 miles of range on a single charge.
- Quick Charging: You can charge these vehicles fast with DC fast charging, which works with both NACS and CCS (with an adapter). Charging from 10% to 80% takes less than 30 minutes.
- Self-Driving Capabilities: R2 and R3 use Rivian’s new perception stack, which includes 11 cameras, five radars, and a more powerful computer platform. This makes the vehicles much better at driving themselves.
- Continuous Improvement: Rivian has designed its network, computer systems, and software platform so that the vehicles can get regular software updates. This means that the features can keep getting better and more exciting over time.
Smart Design Choices:
R2 and R3 show how Rivian’s design can work well for different types and sizes of vehicles.
R2 is designed with a focus on:
- Adventure: R2 has large windows and a rear glass that can fully drop, giving a cool open-air driving experience. R3 has a hatch-style design that creates more space while keeping a sporty look.
- Space: R2 and R3 are designed with a lot of attention to make sure there’s plenty of legroom for passengers, even on long trips. The seats can fold completely flat, and there’s extra storage in the front and back, so everyone and their stuff can fit comfortably.
- Refined Touches: Rivian’s new steering wheel has cool touch controls, making it easier to stay focused on driving. The materials used are tough and eco-friendly, and they’re easy to clean.
R2’s features give you a great Rivian experience at a much lower cost.
R2 Production Begins in Normal, Illinois:
To get R2 out sooner and with less money needed, Rivian is starting to make R2 at its existing manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois. This not only cuts down on the money needed but also lowers the risk and makes the whole process more efficient. It also uses the current teams and increases the total number of units the site can make to 215,000 per year. While Rivian’s Georgia plant is crucial for making more R2 and R3, construction there will start later to make sure the focus is on launching R2 in Normal, Illinois in a cost-effective way.
