In a bold move to expand its rugged SUV lineup, Mercedes-Benz has officially set its sights on introducing a smaller version of the iconic G-Class. Known as the “Little G” or “Baby G Wagon” this compact SUV promises to capture the essence of its larger counterpart while catering to a new segment of enthusiasts.
The Genesis of the Little G
Mercedes-Benz has been making waves with its ambitious plans for the Little G, marking a significant addition to their lineup. The teaser was unveiled at the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, Germany, alongside the introduction of the CLA Concept electric sedan. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, shared that the Little G would distill the bold and brash character of the G-Class into a more compact package. He referred to it as the ‘son or daughter of the iconic big G.’
Distinctive Features and Platform
Set to debut in 2026, the ‘baby G wagon’ will have its platform, emphasizing enhanced off-road capabilities. Unlike its bigger sibling, the Little G will sit on its own unique platform, showcasing the German car maker’s commitment to delivering an unparalleled driving experience. The SUV will be offered with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and all-electric powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid option in select markets.
It is reported that the mini G wagon will feature a 800V electrical architecture, allowing for rapid charging with a 250kW charger. This translates to adding approximately 400km of range in just 15 minutes, promising a seamless electric driving experience. The Little G is also expected to be equipped with a variety of battery options, including lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) and lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC), with capacities ranging from 58kWh to 85kWh.
Positioning and Design Cues
While Mercedes remains tight-lipped about the pricing details, Gorden Wagener, the chief designer, hinted at its positioning, stating, “It will be further up in the market than a compact car.” He emphasized that, design-wise, the Little G will have its own character but will unmistakably carry design cues from the iconic G-Class. Despite featuring a new platform, the design will draw heavily from the EQG’s platform, ensuring a harmonious blend of innovation and tradition.
Speculative Rendering by SRK Designs
Adding to the intrigue surrounding the Baby G Wagon automotive artist SRK Designs has created a speculative render. It’s essential to note that this is purely a speculative render by the artist and not an official design from Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz’s venture into the compact SUV territory with the Little G reflects a strategic move to cater to a diverse range of consumers. With its robust off-road capabilities, electric powertrain options, and a design reminiscent of the iconic G-Class, the Little G is poised to make a lasting mark in the automotive landscape. As enthusiasts eagerly await its debut in 2026, one thing is certain – the “Little G” is set to make a big impact.
