Royal Enfield has unveiled a new limited edition variant of the Classic 500 at a ceremony in the UK. The Royal Enfield Classic 500 Pegasus Edition pays homage to the RE/WD 125 motorcycle which was used during the World War II. Only 1000 units of this limited edition model will be produced out of which 250 units will be sold in India.
The RE/WD 125 was more fondly recalled as ‘The Flying Flea’ by the men who rode it as the 125cc motorcycle deployed behind enemy lines via parachutes and onboard the Horsa Glider to provide communications support and carrying soldiers into battle.
The Royal Enfield Classic 500 Pegasus Edition is available in two colours – Service Brown and Olive Drab Green which are inspired by the original palettes of the Flying Fleas in service during the Second World War. In India, only the Service Brown colour option will be available for sale.
Each of the 1000 individual Classic 500 Pegasus Edition motorcycles carries a unique serial number stencilled on the fuel tank, reminiscent of the War Department motorcycles that served during World War II.
The motorcycles will also wear the esteemed ‘Pegasus’ insignia and get military style canvas saddle bags. Other unique elements include the famous Royal Enfield ‘Made Like a Gun’ decal on the battery box, brown handlebar grips, a leather strap with brass buckles across the air filter, blacked out silencers, rims, kickstart, pedals and headlight bezel to complete the period look.
The Royal Enfield Classic 500 Pegasus Edition is powered by a 499cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine which delivers 27.6 hp @ 5250 rpm and 41.3 Nm of torque @ 4000rpm. Customers of this limited edition bike can also buy a range of Genuine Motorcycle Accessories that are compatible with the motorcycle.
“The story of the Flying Flea is both remarkable and inspiring, and it has a history like no other motorcycle. Rugged military motorcycles have been an integral part of Royal Enfield’s heritage and continues to be till date, as we endeavour to build classic, simple, enduring motorcycles. Our machines have played important role in both World Wars, earning a reputation for endurance in the toughest conditions. The Classic 500 Pegasus is a homage to the legendary war stories and to the resilience and pedigree of Royal Enfield,” said Siddhartha Lal, CEO, Royal Enfield.
