Volkswagen has presented the new VW Touareg. The 5-seater SUV was recently unveiled in Beijing, China. The third generation Volkswagen Touareg is the company’s flagship SUV and very popular in China, Europe and Russia.
The new Touareg is based on the Volkswagen’s modular longitudinal matrix (MLB) platform. The car body is 106 kg lighter due to the mixed material construction of aluminium and high-tech steels. Compared to its predecessor, the third generation Touareg is moderately wider and longer. The new model is also designed to handle trailer weights of up to 3.5 tonnes.
The new VW Touareg is 77 mm longer, 44 mm wider and 7 mm lower than the previous generation SUV. It measures 4878 mm long, 1984 mm wide and 1702 mm high. The luggage compartment capacity has also increased from 697 to 810 litres.
In terms of design, the new Volkswagen Touareg gets a highly expressive front end. It features a chrome of the solid grille which looks as though it had been milled from solid metal, and it seamlessly weaves into the continuous lines of the light signature.
The taut side surfaces of the VW Touareg body look like sails filled with a tailwind. The SUV features accentuated wheel arches at the front and muscular shoulder edges at the rear. The roofline ascends in a flowing manner along a distinctive sideline and terminates dynamically at the C-pillar that angles well forward.
At the rear, the new Touareg gets LED tail light clusters which give the SUV a wider look and also reference the LED graphics of the front end with their L-shaped light signature. The SUV is also offered with wheel sizes ranging from the standard 18 inches up to 21 inches.
The new Touareg will be offered in three trims – Atmosphere, Elegance and R-Line. ‘Atmosphere’ is a warm interior world, in which wood and natural colours reign. ‘Elegance’ stands for a technical interior world where metal and related colours dominate. ‘R-Line’, on the other hand, focuses entirely on sportiness. The Touareg also gets ambient lighting with 30 colours, whose brightness can be variably adjusted.
Volkswagen’s fully digitalised Innovision Cockpit makes it’s world debut with the new Touareg. The Digital Cockpit with 12-inch display and the top Discover Premium infotainment system with 15-inch display merge to form a digital operating, information, communication and entertainment unit that hardly needs any conventional buttons or switches. The SUV also comes with Windshield Head-up Display.
The third generation VW Touareg is equipped with one of the world’s most advanced headlight systems, the IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights. Each headlight has a total of 128 LEDs, this means that, in total, the Volkswagen Touareg utilises the power of 256 LEDs in the various segments of the left and right headlights to make night-time bright as day and safer.
The VW Touareg is also being offered with the largest range of assistance, handling and comfort systems ever to be integrated into a Volkswagen vehicle. It features Night Vision, Roadwork Lane Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Assist, active all-wheel steering, new roll stabilisation with electro-mechanically controlled anti-roll bars.
The five-seater SUV also comes the optional electrically adjustable front seats which include the optional pneumatic massage function which is featured for the first time in the VW Touareg. The SUV is also fitted with the largest panoramic sliding roof implemented in a Volkswagen to date.
Volkswagen will be offering the new VW Touareg with a new plug-in hybrid drive (270 kW/367 PS system power), initially in China. When launched in Europe the new SUV will be offered with two V6 diesels with 170 kW/231 PS and 210 kW/286 PS at first. This will be followed by a V6 petrol engine (250 kW/340 PS) and a V8 turbodiesel (310 kW/421 PS) for many different markets.
The new Touareg also comes with all-wheel drive as standard and has 4MOTION Active Control with driving mode selection which includes Eco, Comfort, Sport, Individual, Snow, Off-Road Auto, Sand, Gravel and Off-Road expert modes. The 4-corner air suspension improves comfort as well as the Touareg’s aerodynamics and rough terrain driving performance.
