The new 2018 Audi A7 Sportback has been unveiled. It now carries the brand’s new design language which was first introduced with the Audi Prologue Concept and was recently seen on the all-new Audi A8.
The new Audi A7 Sportback features large surfaces, sharp edges and taut, athletic lines which signals dynamics and progressiveness from every perspective. At the front we see the single-frame grille which is wider and lower than that of the Audi A8. The sleek headlights are available in three versions where the top variant gets the HD Matrix LED headlights with Audi laser light. The light signature with 12 adjacent lighting segments separated by narrow intervening spaces evokes associations with the binary digits 0 and 1.
The new A7 Sportback rides on wheels, which measure up to 21 inches. The sporty silhouette is defined by the dynamic roofline, which tapers towards the rear like a yacht and finishes in a pronounced, curved lip from which an integrated spoiler extends automatically at 120 km/h. The sporty four-door Gran Turismo measures 4969 mm in length, 1908 mm in width, 1422 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2926 mm.
Moving to the rear we see a flat light strip which is now a design feature common to all of Audi’s top models, joins the rear lights. The tail lamps are made up of 13 vertical segments. The new Audi A7 Sportback is largely devoid of chrome and is offered with a choice of 15 exterior colors, 8 of which are new.
There is also an optional S line exterior package which further enhances the look of the new A7 with a revised radiator grille, front air inlets, the sills and the front and rear diffusers. These parts are finished in gloss black and are more strongly sculpted to give it that sporty look.
The cabin of the new A7 Sportback is like a futuristic lounge. The reduced, clean design, horizontal lines and sleek instrument panel provide for a feeling of airy spaciousness. It comes equipped with optional contour ambient lighting package, 10.1-inch upper display and 8.6-inch lower display.
It also comes with Audi’s new MMI infotainment system and includes the Audi virtual cockpit with a 12.3-inch display. An optional head-up display projetcs the most important information onto the windshield. There is a choice of four sound systems with the top version getting the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System which delivers fascinating 3D sound to the rear seats.
Other additional features include multi-adjustable seats, front seats with ventilation and massage, air quality package and an improved panoramic glass sunroof. Heated windshield and wipers with integrated nozzles are additional options.
The new 2018 Audi A7 Sportback also comes equipped with intelligent and convenient Audi AI systems which include Audi AI remote parking pilot and the Audi AI remote garage pilot.
Additionally, the luxury car features a total of 39 driver assistance systems that are split up into three packages – the Audi AI parking package, the City assist package with the new crossing assist, and the Tour assist package.
The new Audi A7 Sportback is even more agile, nimble thanks to the optional dynamic-all-wheel steering and the new electronic chassis program (ECP). The optional sport differential improves handing even further complementing the Quattro all-wheel drive.
To make the ride more comfortable customers can choose between four suspension setups – a conventional steel spring suspension, the sport suspension that lowers ride height by 10 mm, electronically controlled damping and the self-levelling adaptive air suspension. Stopping power comes from 400 mm diameter disc brakes equipped with fixed aluminium callipers.
Initially at the time of the launch, the new A7 will be powered by the 3.0L V6 TFSI engine. This V6 turbo motor produces 340 hp (250 kW) and 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) of torque. The four-door coupe can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph). This engine is coupled with a 7-speed S tronic gearbox with Quattro drivetrain. Shortly after the production starts, additional six- and four-cylinder engines in both petrol and diesel options will follow.
All engines used in the 2018 Audi A7 Sportback will come standard with a new mild hybrid system (MHEV). A belt alternator starter (BAS) works together with a lithium-ion battery and recovers about 12 kW of performance when braking. At speeds between 55 and 160 km/h the car can coast in the freewheeling mode with the engine switched off and then restarted via the BAS.
The start-stop function activates at 22 km/h. The new A7 Sportback uses a camera to start the engine when at a standstill as soon as the vehicle ahead begins to move. In real-world driving, the MHEV technology helps to reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.7 litres per 100 km.
