Porsche has unleashed the fastest and most powerful street-legal 911 model ever. The new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS made its official world debut at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
Powering this high-performance sports car is a 3.8-liter, twin-turbo flat-six engine which is based on the power plant found in the current 911 Turbo S model. This motor produces 700-horsepower and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. When compared to the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS that is an increase of 80 hp and 50 Nm of more torque. The two-seater sports car can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and can reach a top track speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).
To extract more power from the engine, the engineers at Porsche have equipped the 911 GT2 RS with larger turbochargers that push an increased volume of air into the combustion chambers. To achieve optimum cooling at peak loads a new additional cooling system sprays water on the intercoolers when the intake air temperature approaches a determined threshold. This facilitates to reduce the inlet temperature under boost and allows for optimum power output, even under extreme conditions.
The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS has a customised GT seven-speed double-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission that facilitates maximum efficiency with uninterrupted torque transfer. The lightweight titanium exhaust system that has been specially developed for the 911 GT2 RS helps shed around 7 kg and also produces a particularly emotional exhaust note.
The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS weighs 1470 kg with a full tank of fuel. This weight can be further reduced by nearly 30 kg by opting for the Weissach package which improves the vehicle’s dynamics. The package includes magnesium wheels and various elements made of carbon fiber such as the roof, anti-roll bars and end links on both axles. The forged magnesium wheels reduce both overall and unsprung weight complementing the vehicle’s handling characteristics.
The Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Weissach Package gets a very distinctive look. The carbon fiber weave of the luggage compartment lid and the roof are left largely exposed and carries a racing stripe in the center in the same colour as that of the body.
The interior of the 911 GT2 RS is as sporty as its exterior. There is extensive use of red Alcantara which covers the roof lining, steering wheel grip, centre armrests, seat base and the door trims. The occupants can experience the driving dynamics of the high-performance sports car sitting in the full bucket seats which are finished in black leather and come with carbon fiber reinforced backrests. The seats provide a high level of comfort and lateral support. Carbon fiber trim pieces across the interior come as standard on this special edition.
Also included as standard is the GT2 RS Sport steering wheel with shift paddles. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) serves as the central control unit for audio, navigation, and communication. Porsche Connect Plus and the Porsche Track Precision app are also included as standard, facilitating detailed recording, display, and analysis of driving data on a smartphone.
There is also the optional Chrono Package which expands the PCM functions to include a performance display, which can be utilised to display, save, and evaluate lap times. Also included in the package is a stopwatch on the dashboard featuring an analog and digital display.
The Chrono Package on the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS also provides preparation for the lap trigger available from Porsche Tequipment. When using the Porsche Track Precision app in conjunction with the infrared transmitter placed at the side of the track, the lap trigger receiver enables drivers to record lap times with a higher level of precision.
To celebrate the debut of this very special high-performance sports car, Porsche Design is releasing a special watch. It has teamed up with Porsche Motorsport to develop the 911 GT2 RS Chronograph exclusively for the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS owners.
The housing of the watch is made of lightweight titanium. At its heart is the first clock movement by Porsche Design which took three years to develop. The caliber 01.200 includes a flyback function, a load-path-optimized movement bridge, and an official COSC certificate of authenticity.
The flyback function is inspired by motorsport and represents a special feature of the Porsche Design GT2 RS watch. On a traditional chronograph, the buttons must be pressed three times in order to measure consecutive time intervals. The first press stops the chronograph, the second resets it, and the third restarts the measuring process. On chronographs with a flyback function, these processes happen automatically and in rapid succession. The stop function and the ongoing time display are clearly separated using yellow markings.
The features of the watch have been influenced by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The tungsten winding rotor is modelled after the rims while the clock face is made of carbon fiber. The design of the time display resembles the instrument cluster and the tachometer of the sports car.
The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS and its watch counterpart will be exclusively available at authorised Porsche dealers worldwide. The car and watch are produced and customised individually and according to the customer’s preferences. The high-performance sports car is scheduled to reach dealers in early 2018.
