BMW Group unveiled a new concept car at the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The BMW 8 Series Coupe concept is a teaser of the upcoming model which is slated for launch in 2018. The study car demonstrates that razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury can go hand-in-hand.
The BMW 8 Series Coupe Concept showcases a fresh design direction which we could someday see on future models from the company. The car has an extremely powerful and low-slung silhouette. The long hood and the flowing roofline give the car a dynamic look.
The concept car is finished in an exclusive shade of Barcelona Grey Liquid with highly iridescent tints. BMW designers have worked with the surfaces to create highlights and shadows across the vehicle and provide it with a crisp, modern look.
The iconic BMW kidney grille now sits lower and is spread across the front end as a single large element, a reminiscent of BMW coupes from the good old days. The super-slim laser headlamps extend to the far corners of the hood and the internal elements are given a hexagonal theme.

The sporty nature of the BMW 8 Series Coupe Concept is apparent from the large side air intakes and the carbon-fibre element between them emphasizes the car’s high-performance characteristic.
At the side, we can see two character lines stretching across the length of the car which appear to be formed by the air gushing out from the Air Breathers. The BMW 8 Series Coupe Concept is equipped with 21-inch lightweight multi-spoke alloy wheels.
Just like the rest of the car, the rear is also highly sculpted and the lines accentuate the width of the car. The passenger area of this rear wheel drive coupe tapers towards the rear end while the wheel arches flare out providing the car with a very sporty appeal.
The sleek looking tail lamps take the form of L-shaped blades and are extended all the way to the side of the car. Sitting in the middle lower section is a stylised carbon-fibre diffuser surrounded by large trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes.
The interior of the BMW 8 Series Coupe Concept focuses on the essential task of driving. It has been designed to impart a sporty yet luxurious feel. The fluid transition from the instrument panel into the doors is a highlight of the interior design. All of the driver’s contact points with the car are infused with sporting character. The slim sports seats use a carbon fibre shell and are wrapped in the finest leather.
The steering wheel gets hand polished aluminium spokes along with red anodised shift paddles. Gripping surfaces are finished in dark leather emphasising the luxurious sense of sportiness. The gearshift lever and the iDrive Controller are made from Swarovski glass with a smoky quartz look, adding to the modern and classy finishing touches.
The interior is adorned in Merino leather in Dark Brown and Fjord White which provides it with a high-quality ambience. Use of carbon fibre and hand-polished aluminium as accent surfaces radiate a sporty and technical feel.
The production model of the BMW 8 Series Coupe Concept will set new benchmarks in the luxury coupe segment when launched. Alongside with the development of the standard 8 Series, the engineers at BMW M are also working on a BMW M8 model.
The BMW M8 will feature larger air intakes, a sports exhaust with four tailpipes and modified brakes. Engine power will be significantly boosted and we can expect a more dynamic driving experience from the M model.
BMW is also working on a race-spec BMW M8 GTE car. This race car spearheads the return of BMW Motorsport to Le Mans. The company promises that the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular. The initial roll-out is planned for the first half of this year. The car will make its race debut in the Daytona 24 Hours in late January 2018.
