The all-new 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo blends the long-distance comfort of a luxury sedan with alluring coupe style. It is the successor to one of the most creative vehicle concepts of recent years, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. The new model will make its public debut at Frankfurt’s International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2017.
Engineers have managed to shave around 150 kg off the weight of the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo compared to the outgoing model thanks to the increased use of aluminium and high-strength steel grades for body and chassis components.
The new 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo has dynamically stretched proportions. It measures 5,091 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width, 1,538 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 3,070 mm. The long bonnet, the set-back positioning of the cabin, elongated window outline and the coupe-like roofline which sweeps down to merge into a tail provide the BMW 6 Series GT with a distinct look.
The front end has a very powerful appearance, the lenses of the LED headlights which come as standard extend all the way to the large BMW kidney grille. The three-dimensional styling of the rear lights adds an eye-catching touch to the new BMW 6 Series GT.
The low-slung silhouette also improves the car’s aerodynamic properties which combined with active air flap control and other measures including Air Curtains, Air Breathers and an automatically extending rear spoiler, lower the drag coefficient (Cd) to as little as 0.25.
The interior has been designed to provide a driver-focused cockpit and an extremely spacious passenger compartment. The cabin’s lines, materials and precision workmanship give the interior of the BMW 6 Series GT a highly sophisticated and premium feel.
The new 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo comes as standard with Dakota leather upholstery. This which can be specified in a range of different colours and interpretations, depending on the equipment lines. Exclusive Nappa leather is available as an option in several different variants. And the likewise optional Sensatec trim for the instrument panel is offered in the colours Black and Coffee.
The raised seating position optimises the driver’s all-round view while the rear has three full-size seats offering maximised legroom. Customers can also choose the electrically adjustable comfort seats option for the rear that allows the backrest angle to be altered at the push of a button. Also available as an option are the electrically operated sun blinds for the rear side windows.
The BMW 6 Series GT features a one-piece tailgate that opens and closes electrically as standard. The boot capacity is measured at 610 litres and the boot sill is lower and sits flush with the boot floor. The 40:20:40 split backrest can be released remotely and folded flat electrically via a button in the boot. Folding the seats flat increases the boot space to 1,800 litres. The two-piece luggage compartment cover has a rigid structure and can be stowed away in a compartment underneath the boot floor.
The 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is equipped with a new generation of engines that feature cutting-edge TwinPower Turbo technology and get the eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. BMW xDrive is also available as an option.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit in the new BMW 630i Gran Turismo develops a maximum output of 258 hp (190 kW) and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). It accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in BMW 640i Gran Turismo produces an output of 340 hp (250 kW )and maximum torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). It enables the car to accelerate to 100 km/h from rest in 5.4 seconds, while the new BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo does it a second faster at 5.3 seconds.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the BMW 630d Gran Turismo produces a power of 265 hp (195 kW) and peak torque of 620 Nm (457 lb-ft). It can do 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds while the BMW 630d xDrive Gran Turismo does it in 6.0 seconds.
Improvements made to chassis technology offer excellent handling dynamics and driving comfort to the new BMW 6 Series GT. The car now gets self-levelling air suspension as standard at the rear axle. Customers can also get the optional Adaptive suspension which features front and rear air suspension plus Dynamic Damper Control. The Executive Drive option, which is offered in combination with the Integral Active Steering system and also includes active roll stabilisation, gives the vehicle a sportier edge.
The two-axle air suspension allows the vehicle’s ride height to be adjusted manually. It can be raised by 20 mm at the touch of a button or lowered by 10 mm by again pushing a button, or automatically when SPORT mode is engaged via the Driving Experience Control switch or the car’s speed exceeds 120 km/h. All optional suspension systems are now available in conjunction with BMW xDrive.
The new 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is equipped with a display and control system for operating vehicle, navigation, communication and infotainment functions. At the heart of it all is the iDrive system with the Touch Controller on the centre console and the Control Display, now in the form of a high-resolution 10.25 inches freestanding touchscreen. The BMW 6 Series GT also offers the convenience of both enhanced voice control and BMW gesture control. Customers can also opt for the new-generation BMW Head-Up Display.
The driver assistance systems in the new BMW 6 Series GT utilises stereo camera and can also be equipped with optional radar and ultrasonic sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation come as standard.
Optional features include improved version of Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Steering and Lane control assistant, Lane Departure and Lane Change Warning systems, Side Collision Warning, Crossing traffic warning, Priority warning, Crossroads warning and Wrong-way warning systems. The BMW 6 Series GT can also be ordered with the Remote Control Parking feature.
The 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo owners can also enjoy the benefits of BMW Connected, a digital personal mobility assistant which facilitates everyday mobility and helps them to reach your destinations relaxed and on time. It also features function such as Real Time Traffic Information, On-Street Parking Information and Remote 3D View.
